HURDLERS IN ACTION AT RICCARTON

RACING

Horses which have been nominated for the hurdle race at the Ashburton meeting on September 17 were among those schooled at Riccarton yesterday. On Broadway (M. A. Skinner) was always well clear of Rebel Knight (D. Arney) in their run over six hurdles. As they are novices, their displays were not of a good standard, but they have shown I improvement since they were first tried. I Rebel Knight ran out at some of the I hurdles. Diameter (R. J. Hawefe) made a fair showing over four hurdles. He jumped extravagantly at some obstacles. Owenga (M. A. Skinner) and Moonlit (R. E. Gunn) were paired over six hurdles. They jumped the first two cleanly, but both made minor mistakes at the third and fourth. Owenga drew on terms with a big leap pt the fifth flight, and they were practically together at the finish. Lord Robin jumped two hurdles safely. The Riccarton trainer, C. C. McCarthy, is preparing Sequoia for another campaign. The Nepturne four-year-old left the hack ranks with two wins in the hack distance races at the Dunedin Jockey Club’s Christmas meting last year. He was put aside after racing at the Wellington meeting last January. I R. P. Register is preparing a three-year-old brother to Fur Coat for racing. He is by Pink Coat out of White Doe. Register will leave to-day for Westport with Foxella and Romantic. For Carterton Julius Caesar and Swayup. which are trained at Riccarton, are acceptors at the Carterton Racing Club’s meeting on Saturday. Julius Caesar is top-weight with 9-0 in the £BOO Wairarapa County Handicap. one mile and a quarter. Swayup is engaged in the Electric Hack Handicap, five furlongs. Swayup has not raced since the Ashburton autumn meeting in April, when he won a double. His form earlier in the season had been consistent, and he showed rapid improvement. He is a brilliant beginner and he is fit for a bold showing on Saturday. He will be taken north tonight.
