HORSES SOLD TO AUSTRALIA

NATIONAL VELVET AND GAMBLE KING National Velvet and Gamble King have been sold to Australian buyers, and they will be shipped soon. National Velvet, which was owned by Messrs M. and J. Wilson, was trained for his early races by R. J. Berry, for whom he showed his best form in his two starts as a two-year-old in the 1945-46 season when he finished second to Sahara Queen in the Oamaru Juvenile Stakes at the Oamaru Trotting Club's meeting in May. 1946. At his first appearance as a three-year-old, National Velvet led all the w’ay to win the first division of the Ikamatua Handicap at the Reefton Trotting Club’s meeting. After gaining a win and two thirds in his other 11 starts for the season, National Velvet was transferred to V. Leeming’s team at Prebbleton. For Leeming, National Velvet raced consistently to gain three wins and six minor placines in the 1947-48 season, and last term he added two wins, four seconds, and a third to his record. A Grattan Loyal gelding. National Velvet is out of Daphne de Oro, which took a record of 4min 25 4-ssec. By Logan Pointer or Rev de Oro from Doraldina. Daphne de Oro is also the dam of Tim Worthy. E. Thompson. Under the guidance of W. R. Butt, who trained him at Templeton. Gamble King raced well as a five-year-old to gain two wins and five minor placings for Mr G. T. Roper, who raced him on lease. Gamble King improved rapidly, and in the 1945-46 season he was placed in 11 of his 16 races, his record including three wins. In the following term he added two wins and three minor placings to his record, but he subsequently lost form, finishing out of a place in his 19 races in the 1947-48 season. Last season Gamble King showed his best form when he beat a strong field in the William Hayward Handicap at the New Zealand Metropolitan Trotting Club's meeting on November 6. A big Gamble gelding. Gamble King is out of a winner in Beverley King, by Native King from Beverley Audubon, by Great Audubon from St. Ursula, by Papanui from Lucy Hinton. National Velvet and Gamble King both have some fast times to their credit. They should do well in Australia. Ballotted Out To reduce the size of the field to the safety limit, the following horses were balloted out of the Electric Handicap at the New Brighton Trotting Club’s meeting on Saturday;—Bonny Scott, County Antrim. Dillondale, Novelda. Scholarship, Victory Globe. Track Work at New Brighton The outside of the main track was open for work at New Brighton yesterday morning. The track is in splendid order, and it should provide fast going at the New Brighton Trotting Club’s meeting on Saturday. Rakautika, which was paced by Fulgent. gave a solid display of trotting when working over two miles. Piccolo was too good for Broml°v Lad and Our Sylvie at the end of a mile and a half in 3min 41 2-ssec. If he leaves the

mark correctly, Piccolo may win the Brighton Handicap on Saturday. Gough’s Pride set the pace when working over two miles in 4min 54 4-ssec with Nebula and Scottish Emperor. The last four furlongs were covered in Imin 9 2-ssec. An aged son of U. Scott and Princess Napoleon, Scottish Emperor, which was trained for his races last season by J. Young at Addington, is now in F. , Walker’s team at New Brighton. Bonny Gold and Golden Slipper covered a mile and a half in 3min 29 3-ssec, the last four furlongs taking Imin 9sec. Doreano. which was accompanied by Nostradamus, trotted the last half-mile of his trial in Imin 12sec. Direct Medium and Despatch sprinted the last half-mile of their trial in Imin 9sec. Worked Alone Bonny Scott, a visitor from Addington, covered the last four furlongs in Imin 6sec when worked alone over two miles. Doreen Axworthy paced Alandale and Two Step over a mile and a half in 3m in 40sec. Alandale should race well from the 12 yards mark in the Welcome Trotting Handicap at the New Brighton meeting this week. Bonny Brogue paced smoothly when 35sec in§ ° Ver 3 mile and 3 half ’ n 3min The Papanui trainer, A. Leggett, was a visitor with High Stakes and Jack’s Luck, which both look well. Reciprocal Handicapping Scheme The handicapper to the New Zealand Trotting Conference, Mr A. R. Neilson, said yesterday that the West Australian, Victoria. New South Wales, South Australian, and New Zealand trotting organisations have agreed to a reciprocal handicapping scheme. “The scheme should be of considerable benefit to New Zealand breeders,” said Mr Neilson. "Previously maiden New Zealand horses could not start in races for maiden pacers in Australia because these races were reserved for State-bred horses. The scheme will also facilitate the tree exchange of horses on equitable terms throughout Australia and New Zealand.” Broke Up Integrity, which finished third to Globe Direct and Gay Knight in the Lightning Handicap on the Erst day of the New Zealand Metropolitan Trotting Club’s national meeting, made his i,ask too hard when he broke at the start of the Speedway Handicap on the concluding day of the meeting on Saturday. Converted Cottesloe, which won two races as a pacer, has been converted back to the trotting gait, and t will be in this division that she will race this season. As a three-year-old she finished second in the New Zealand Trotting Stakes at Addington, but she did her later racing as a pacer. A Gallant Knight mare, Cottesloe is out of a good class mare in Probationer, the dam of other winners including Oregon, Night Porter, Poppotunoa, and Medical Student. Not Disgraced Red Emperor was not disgraced when he was beaten into fourth place after giving away starts of up to 24 yards in the Metropolitan Stakes at Addington on Saturday. A handsome Light Brigade horse. Red Emperor may gain his first win for the season nt the Auckland Troting Club’s meeting later in the month. Dillon Hall's Record During the past four seasons Dillon Hall has been represented by 25 individual three-year-old winners. In the same period. Gold Bar and Springfield Globe each claimed 15 individual three-year-old winners, and Josedale Grattan 12. May Win at Westport President, which finished second in his two races at the Reefton Jockey Club’s meeting on Saturday, may leave the maiden classes with a win at the Westport Jockey Club’s meeting this week. Never a Possibility Great Venture never appeared as a possibility alter breaking at the start of the Winter Handicap at Addington on Saturj day. A fine trotter when he is on his , best behaviour, Great Venture may race well in the main event at New Brighton ■ on Saturdav.
