WATER SUPPLY

huntsbury pipe TENDERS

PROGRESS ON NEW BRIGHTON SERVICE Big tenders for the supply of pipes for reticulation from the new City Council water reservoir at Huntsoury Hill were accepted by the council last evening. The tender of Hume Steel. Ltd., for the supply of 24-inch cement mortar lined steel pipe at a price of £9146 f.o.b. Timaru was accepted. The tender was made upon a steel basis price of £36 a ton and the freight cost from Timaru to Christchurch is estimated at £462 10s. Two tenders for the supply of 10,000 feet of four-meh water pipe were accepted. The first, by John Burns and Company. Ltd., was for cement asbestos pipe at £2190. due at the end of September, and the second, by John Duthie. Ltd., was for spun cast iron pipe at £2673, due to arrive in about seven months. Satisfactory progress had been made with the sinking of the first artesian well and the installation of some eightinch pipe at New Brighton, reported the water supply committee. City water was now on the New Brighton side of the Seaview road bridge and eight-inch pipe was being laid via New Brighten road towards the Dumping station site. The Hawke street four-inch main was about to be begun. The bore had reached a depth of 300 feet and a satisfactory source of water for the second bore had been located at about 280 feet. "With the installation of watermains in New Brighton there will be many applications for water,’’ reported the committee. “Unfortunately, until the 12-inch and 10-inch pipe arrives for the Kerr's road connexion a very limited amount only can be available. The manufacturers expect to deliver this nipe in five months so that not less than six months will elapse before a satisfactory supply becomes possible By this time it is hoped to have s large portion of New Brighton reticulated. so that the pipes generally will be installed ahead of a satisfactory supply of water.”
