NEW ZEALAND 157 FOR ONE WICKET

SUTCLIFFE MAKES 61

(From A. W. MITCHELL, Special Correspondent N.Z.P.A.)

(Rec. 2 a.m.) LIVERPOOL, August 22. By lunch to-day, the New Zealand j cricketers, in their first innings, had made 157 runs lor one wicket, in reply to Lancashire’s first innings total of 318. Sutcliffe made 61. The weather to-day is warm and sunny, and the wicket is easy-paced. This morning, Sutcliffe and Scott began scoring quickly when they continued the New Zealand innings. In the first half-hour, they added 45 runs to the overnight total of nine. They played medium-paced balls from Stone and Greenwood with skill and ease. Sutcliffe began with a clean offdrive off Greenwood. He then nit all round the wicket. He mixed boundaries with neat leg glances for singles, and was aided by the fast outfield. Scott was inclined to dab with his bat at the ball, rather than to drive it.

Tattersall was used as the first change bowler. Also a medium-pace bowler, he took over from Stone, and both Sutcliffe and Scott played him ca rcfully in his opening overs, one of which was a maiden to Scott. Then Sutcliffe turned him to leg for a single t° reach his 50 in 55 minutes. Greenwood bowled for nearly an hour. Then a left-arm bowler, Hilton, who achieved prominence last year by bowling Bradman, came on. His first over was a maiden. One ball completely beat Scott’s bat. Sutcliffe Dismissed Both Tattersall and Hilton were bowling accurately, and the rate of scoring dropped. Scott showed marked* caution After a quiet period, Sutcliffe lofted Tattersall to the on boundary, and Scott on-drove Hilton for three.

Aitken, who bowls right-handed off-spmners, relieved Tattersall, and bcott on-drove a full toss for two In Aitken’s next over, Scott on-drove him to the boundary. Then, with a leg glance to the boundary off Ailken Scott put the 100 up after a total of 95 minutes’ play. Sutcliffe was beaten by Ikin, and had his leg stump jerked back. He °f 104 in a little more than 95 minutes of delightful batting. He attempted an on-drive, and played on J

Scott reached his 50 with an ondrive to the boundary off Ikin. He had then been batting for one hour and 55 minutes With Rabone, he continued to move the score along steadily, and at. 1 p.m. New Zealand was one for 129.

Scott began hitting more freely after reaching his 50. He on-drove both Hiiton and Ikin. Rabone scored more freely than usual, using his two main shots—to leg and through the slips. Greenwood returned for Hilton and Rabone pushed him through the slips for a single to bring up the 150 m a little more than 2 hours 15 minutes.
