(New Zealand Press Association.) PALMERSTON NORTH, July 31. Defending the New Zealand Hockey Shield, Manawatu staved off a strong challange by Poverty Bay on Saturday, to win by 3 to 0.. The game was played on a heavy ground before a large crowd and -in the presence of the North Island selectors. The next challenge has been offered Canterbury. WOMEN’S GAMES Because of the wet grounds the junior grades of the women’s hockey competitions were postponed 4>n Saturday—many of the senior grade games were not played. Results:— Senior A Grade.—Christchurch West 3, Technical 1; Selwyn 5, Aranui 1; Carlton 3, Hornby 1; Digbys 4, Rawhiti 1. Senior Reserve.—Selwyn A 5, Selwyn B 3; Training College 4, Avonside 2; Christchurch West beat Sumner by default. Senior B Grade.—Christchurch West A 4, Hinernoa 1; Aranui B 6, Avonside 0; Technical 5, Rawhiti 1.
