JOBS IN PUBLIC SERVICE
WARNING GIVEN BY MR W. G. V. FERNIE In the Public Service promotion was low and ability was not always recognised because of the rigidity of the system, said the president of the New Zealand Employers’ Federation (Mr W. G. V. Fernie), speaking at the presentation of Chamber of Commerce commercial examination diplomas and certificates on Saturday morning. A feature of the Public Service was that employees carried no responsibility. “Everyone passes the buck; no one will make a decision,” he said. Mr Fernie said boys and girls should be warned against taking jobs which offered high wages to start with but poor prospects later. A pamphlet advertising conditions in the Government service showed that wages paid for juniors were high but did not rise to a very high level as the years passed. “If you enter positions in private businesses there will be no limit to where you will go.” said Mr Fernie. “There will be numerous opportunities for advancement. Most of the heads of Christchurch firms to-day began by sweeping the floors of the shops and offices they work for.”
