The Murchison Earthquake ♦ I ago yesterday occurred the West Coast's worst earthquake shock, when several people lost their lives at Murchison. Soon after 10 a.m. on June 17, 1927. the main shock, causing damage estimated at many thousands of pounds, was felt. The town of Murchison was wiped out. and several farm houses in the surrounding valleys were buried by landslides, with loss of life. Karamea and Seddonville suffered from flooding, caused by landslides blocking rivers. The area between Inangahua and Murchison still bears scars of the upheaval in the Buller Gorge. Power for Westport The purchase by the Buller Electric Power Board of the electric works of the Westport borough has been authorised by an Order-in-Council.
