JUNIOR BRASS BANDS
SOLO COMPETITIONS Stewart Cowie’ (Hawera Municipal Band), playing a tenor horn, won the New Zealand A grade junior solo contest organised by the New Zealand Brass Bands Association and held in Christchurch last evening. The judge (Mr K. G. L. Smith) said that the standard of playing was very high. Results were as follows: Solo.—A grade: Stewart Cowie, 95 points, 1; D. B. Dewe (Palmerston* North Garrison, bass), 93, 2; W. Newth (Palmerston North Garrison, baritone), 91, 3. B Grade.—M. Francis (Palmerston North City Silver, euphonium), 91, 1; W. Fenton (Wellington Watersiders’ Junior, cornet), 88, 2; B. Hanify (Wellington Boys’ Institute, cornet), and K. Keough (Wellington Watersiders’ Junior, tenor horn). 87, 3. C Grade.—K. Jarrett (Palmerston North City Silver, cornet), 84. 1; G. Aldridge (Derry s Military, comet), 76, 2; K. McGrath (Christchurch Municipal Junior, tenor horn), 75, 3 Quartet.—Hawera Municipal (conductor. Mr H. C. A. Fox), 91, 1; Palmerston North City Silver (R. C.
