TEN-YEAR SENTENCE FOR INDECENT ASSAULT
(New Zealand Press Association.) AUCKLAND, May 12. “This was a savage and degrading business and was akin to what you did in 1930 when you committed rape on a little girl,” said Mr Justice Finlay to George Dawson Barrett, aged 58, a labourer, who appeared for sentence on a charge of indecently assaulting a young boy.
His Honour said it would appear that the prisoner was a man who was a menace to the community. The Court’s first duty was the protection of the public. He could not impose a sentence of less than 10 years in such a gross and cruel case. He sentenced the prisoner to 10 years’ imprisonment with hard labour.
