MAORI LAND TENURE
“INCONSISTENCIES OF LEGISLATION ” MR J. K. MCALPINE’S VIEWS From Our Own Reporter KAIKOURA, May 6. The Maori had the same rights as a European as far as drinking was concerned, but not with land tenure in that land owned by the Maori could be sold outside the jurisdiction of the Land Sales Court, said Mr J. K. McAlpine, M.P. for the Selwyn electorate, in an address at Kaikoura. This was one of the many inconsistencies in the Government’s legislation, he said. Mr McAlpine quoted a case from the Wellington district where a piece of Maori land had been sold to a European for £245. An adjoining section of about the same area was sold to the same purchaser under the Land Sales Court for £65. When the Maori section was reoffered for sale, the court would only allow the vendor £55, Mr McAlpine said.
