TEKAPO TOWN PLANNING
SCHEME APPROVED TOURIST ATTRACTIONS EMPHASISED From Our Own Reporter TIMARU. May 6. The initial arrangements for an extra-urban town planning scheme at Lake Tekapo were approved by the Mackenzie County Council at a meeting at Tekapo this afternoon. The scheme has been prepared by the Tekapo Planning Commission and will now be submitted for the approval of the New Zealand Town Planning Board. It was planned to provide a residential area up to ordinary suburban standards, with hotel accommodation, a shopping area, and urban amenities, a modern motor camp, a week-end bach area, a winter sports hostel, and an enlarged skating rink, said the chairman of the commission, Dr. L. 3. Talbot, this evening. There would be a separate residential area for State Hydro personnel. Dr Talbot emphasised the health value of the locality, particularly with regard to the establishment of a national health school at Tekapo. The Minister of Health (Miss M. B. Howard) had expressed her approval of the project in an interview with the Tekapo Planning Commission in February. 1948. he said. The commission had persevered to bring before the Department of Internal Affairs the recreational and tourist possibilities of the Tekapo area. The commission was a body appointed some years ago by the Mackenzie County Council to advise it on the planning of the Tekapo area. The scheme would have possibilities in view of the climatic and scenic attractions at Tekapo. said the secretary of the commission (Mr T. Moorehouse) .
