Heavy Casualties i Expected 30 KNOWN DEAD (N.Z. Press Association—Copyright) (Rec. 12.10 a.m.) „ SANTIAGO (Chile), April 20. Heavy casualties and damage to property are thought to have been caused by an earthquake which rocked central and southern Chile last night. Thirty known dead were inmates of a prison at Traiguen, which collapsed. Other casualties are feared in other towns with which communication is cut. The towns of Los Sauces, San Rosendo, and Angol were badly hit. A third of Angol is said to be in ruins. The earthquake was also especially noticeable round the cities of Concepcion. Talca, and Temuco. The State Telegraph Agency said that the intensity of the earthquake at Temuco was nine, a high rating. The earthquake is believed to have been centred between the cities of Chilian and Concepcion, where the intensity was eight and seven. There is no report of damage or casualties at these points, but Concepcion’s electric power failed for 30 minutes, causing panic among residents.
