GROWING THREAT TO HANKOW
COMMUNIST MOVES IN HUPEH YANGTSE NAVIGATION INTERRUPTED (Rec. 7 p.m.) NANKING, March 29 A Communist brigade is now within 30 miles of Hankow, according to the Chinese Nationalist News Agency. Unofficial reports said that other Communist columns were moving in on Nationalist-evacuated territories in Hupeh, north and north-west of Hankow. The Nationalist forces have withdrawn to the south of the Yangtse, except for some north bank bridgeheads, in accordance with the Government’s policy of avoiding fighting with the Communists as the Nationalists sue for peace. Navigation on the Yangtse near Anking was suspended after the Communists had shelled two river steamers in the area. One passenger is reported to have been killed and another injured. Bandit activity in South China appears now to be assuming the shape of an over-all Communist offensive in the rear of the Nationalists as they guard the Yangtse. Messages from Changsha to-day said that the loss of Chienyang in West Hunan, had made the situation m Hungkiang and Huitung critical.
