STAMP DESIGNS
Sir, —lf the man in the street were to have any say in the matter of the designs for the Canterbury Centennial stamps, then an opportunity should have been afforded the public of submitting any likely ideas or rough drawings of merit to some first selectors. Designs originally chosen in this way could have then been redrawn and finished by experts with the necessary technical skill. But the president of the Christchurch Philatelic Society knows very well that the DirectorGeneral has called for designs “in finished form ready for engraving.” If Mr Dacre would name any expert here who can do this technical finishing, I will be glad to give him a heap of bright ideas. There are only two artists in Wellington qualified to do work ready for engraving. Mr Berry is one. and neither is available. So who’s pulling whose leg?—Yours, etc., OFFSET. March 30, 1949.
