88TH BIRTHDAY CELEBRATED

SIR R. HEATON RHODES

Sir R. Heaton Rhodes, of Tai Tapu celebrated his 88th birthday yesteryay- A small party of relatives and friends was held at Sir Heaton Rhodes’s home, Otahuna.

Sir Heaton Rhodes trained in England for the legal profession, but soon after his return to New Zealand he took up farming and entered politics. He first gained the Ellesmere seat in the House of Representatives in 1899, and was a member of Parliament for 26 years. He was later a member of the Legislative Council. He held several portfolios at different times. In his younger days. Sir Heaton Rhodes established a reputation as a soldier. His later activities have included humanitarian interests, stock breeding and horticulture, and philately.
