OBITUARY

MR J. W. BUTCHER "The Press” Special Service WELLINGTON, February 26. The Wellington tramper, Mr J. W. Butcher, who died from injuries suffered in a fall in the Mount Cook district, was a former Government Statistician. He retired in April, 1946. after 40 years in the Public Service. Mr Butcher took a keen interest in tramping and also in botany. He was a foundation member and honorary life member of the Tararua Tramping Club. Mr Butcher joined the statistical branch of the Registrar-General’s Department in 1906. He was appointed chief compiler of the Government Statistician’s office in 1915. and in 1929 was promoted to the position of Assistant Government Statistician. He was appointed Statistician on the retirement of Mr Malcolm Fraser in 1932. In 1935 Mr Butcher attended a conference of Empire statisticians at Ottawa. At one time he was a hockey enthusiast, and for a time was club captain of the Karori Hockey Club. Mr Butcher leaves a wife and two daughters.
