ATTEMPTED THEFT DENIED

ALLEGED INCIDENT AT TRENTHAM RACES (P.A.) WELLINGTON, February 23. A plea of not guilty was entered by Raymond Hector Judd, aged 50 a soldier, in the Wellington Magistrate’s Court today, to a charge of attempted theft of £55 Bs, the property of the Wellington Racing Club. He was committed by Mr A. M. Goulding, S.M., to the Supreme Court for trial. A totalisator pay-out clerk said in evidence that, after the fifth race at Trentham on January 24, a soldier presented a ticket on the winner of the preceding race. The witness saw that the ticket’s number had been altered from six to 16, and he refused to accept it. The dividend on the race was £55 Bs.

Detective-Sergeant Craigie said he interviewed accused at Trentham. The accused said a man whom he did hot know had given him the ticket to obtain payment on it.
