MAKIKIHI FLAX MILL TO BE CLOSED

REBUILDING PROPOSAL ABANDONED From Our Own Reporter WAIMATE, February 21. Instead of being rebuilt, after the fire which destroyed the main scutching shed and plant on December 30. the linen flax mill at Makikihi will be closed. All but one or two key employees will be dismissed within the next fortnight, when pulling operations are completed. A statement that the mill would De rebuilt provided a sufficient acreage in crop could be guaranteed was made at a meeting recently when the damage caused by the fire was discussed by members of the Linen Flax Corporation and growers of the district. It is understood that other factors have since entered into the corporation’s decision to close the mill. Apart from the number of single men and women employed when the mill was in operation, about 20 married men will be affected. The mill had an annual wages bill of approximately £20,000.
