"INFANTRY BRIGADIER.” By Major-General Sir Howard Kippenberger, K.8.E., D. 5.0., and Bar, C.B. Except for General Freyberg himself, no officer was more closely identified with the 2nd N.Z. Division, and no better known or liked by its hard-bitten veterans; or better able to speak for those who took part in all the Division’s major campaigns: Greece, Crete, Libya; the desert battles at Ruweisat and El MreirAlamein: the "left hook” at Agheila, and the pursuit, at Tripoli: the ’’left hook” round the Mareth Line; the final Tunisian battles: the fighting on the Sangro; and the winter struggle for Cassino. In most of these actions he was in command of an Infantry Brigade, too close to fighting and the front line for his awareness of the individual soldier’s dangers and tragedies to become dulled, and yet distant enough from it for him to see a campaign in its whole perspective.
