TOP PLAYERS AT MASTERTON
EXCITING FINALS EXPECTED (P.A.) MASTERTON, January 21. The final of the men’s championship singles in the Wairarapa Lawn Tennis Association’s open tournament at Masterton to-morrow afternoon will be played between J. E. Robson (Otago) and R. S. McKenzie (Wellington). Both are playing grand tennis and considerable intere’st is being taken in the prospect of McKenzie turning the tables on Robson after the latter’s New Zealand singles surprise. Robson eliminated the Wairarapa singles title holder, O. Bold (Hutt), this morning in one of the best games seen in Masterton for a long time. Bold went down fighting to lose the first set 6-8 and the second set 4-6, after giving the impression that he would bring off a major surprise. McKenzie beat P. Hawksworth (Masterton), 6-3, 6-3, the latter being by no means outplayed. McKenzie’s overhead work was excellent and his placements accurate. At times Hawksworth scored with scorching drives. In the women’s singles, Miss Mavis Kerr (Otago) will meet Mrs Anderson (Wellington) to-morrow afternoon. Miss Kerr is playing up to her best form. In the girls’ singles final. Miss M. Hoar will meet Miss P. Hutchison, and in the boys’ singles G. Adams will play G. Keyes. Miss Kerr (Otago) and Mrs Keedwell (Carterton) will play Mesdames Anderson
and Gyles (Wellington) in the final of the women's doubles. R. McKenzie and J. Robson have gone into the final of the men's doubles and will meet the winner of the game between Smith and Ferkins and Bold and Charters.
