CANTERBURY LEADS IN TANNER CUP CONTEST FOR P CLASS BOATS (P.A.) DUNEDIN, January 17. With four races sailed on the Otago Harbour in the inter-provincial series of the Tanner Cup for P class yachts, the Canterbury boat is eight points ahead of Wellington, followed by Auckland, Nelson, Marlborough and Otago. The two races held to-day were won by Auckland and Nelson. A strong wind varying from north-east to north made sailing conditions difficult for the boys, who nevertheless gave fine performances. In the afternoon race over a triangular course the Nelson boat covered the course three times in 55 minutes, which was excellent handling of small craft in such conditions. The series should be decided to-morrow morning when a windward and leeward course will be sailed. The positions of the boats after four races are:— Canterbury, 248.81pt5, 1; Wellington,; 240pts, 2; Auckland. 235.24pt5, 3; Nelson, 216.6pt5, 4; Marlborough, 190pts, 5; Otago, 98.32pt5, 6.. To-day’s results were:— _ Morning race: Auckland (D. Townson) 1, Canterbury (D. Mander) 2, Nelson (W. Nalder) 3, Wellington (M. Pinkney) 4, Marlborough (A. Baxter) 5, Otago (L. Hart) retired. Afternoon race: Nelson 1, Auckland 2, Wellington 3, Marlborough 4. Canterbury capsized, and Otago withdrew.
