SCHOOL BADGE
USE OF DUKE’S CREST The work by the pupils of the Warkworth District High School to maintain a regular flow of food parcels to Warkworth School in Northumberland has resulted jn the high school’s obtaining a badge design which is closely linked with the history of England. The Duke of Northumberland has given consent to the use of his crest, the Percy Lion, as the school badge. Throughout the Aid to Britain campaign, parcels have been sent by the high school pupils to Warkworth School in Northumberland, from which the North Auckland town’s founders came nearly a century ago. Old Northumberland names are perpetuated in Warkworth by Coquet street, Pulham road, Alnwick street, Percy street and others.
A suitable badge, reminiscent of the town’s foundation, was sought for some time by the Warkworth District High School committee and the problem was mentioned in letters which accompanied food parcels. There the vicar of Warkworth interested the Duke of Northumberland, who agreed to his crest’s being used. The lion rampant crest of the Percy fpmily is similar to the familiar Auckland Grammar School lion, but on the Warkworth badge it will be in blue and black-
