CRICKET AND SWIMMING EVENTS Play began on Hagley Oval yesterday in the inter-district Army cricket tournament in conjunction with the Army sports tournament being held in Christchurch. Teams from the three New Zealand districts and headquarters are taking part and at the conclusion of the tournament an Army team will be selected to play in the inter-services tournament to be held at Auckland next year. Swimming events were held last evening and athletics will be held to-day. The results of the cricket matches played yesterday were as follows: NMD (81 and 150 for seven) won on the first innings from S.M.D. (73 and 97 for three). C.M.D. (239 for eix declared) beat Army H. (120). Batting for C.M.D., Lieutenant Poananga scored 71, Lieutenant G. Tomline 66, Lieutenant Salmon 37 not out, and Captain B. A. Andrews 24. Bowling for C.M.D., Lieutenant Poananga took six wickets for 19. SWIMMING EVENTS C.M.D. won the swimming events held in the Tepid Baths, with 42 points. S.M.D. was second with 41 points.
