PRIZE-GIVING CEREMONIES

CATHEDRAL GRAMMAR SCHOOL The preparatory schools and small church schools justified themselves because they aimed at providing a sound personal coaching and tuition and emphasised cultural activity, said the principal of the Christch'urch Technical College (Dr. D. E. Hansen), speaking at the annual prize-giving ceremony of the Christchurch Cathedral Grammar School last evening. Dr. Hansen is a member of the board of governors of the school. There had been some talk of the abolition of preparatory and public schools in England, he said, but this had lost its force with the decision of the British Government—Labour Government though it was—to maintain the public school system and to open it up to include the sons of people who Were not very well off. The church and private school system, in spite of the criticism levelled against it, must be sound or else it could not have survived for so long and so well, said Dr. Hansen. The headmaster (Mr R. R. Gibson) presented his report for the year and said that entries would have to be limited for 1949 or the sizes of the classes would become too unwieldy for the purposes of the school.
