Mr and Mrs W. McCarthy (London), who were passengers on the Rangitiki which arrived in Wellington on Wednesday arrived in Christchurch yesterday to spend a holiday with their daughter and son-in-law, Mr and Mrs C. A. Tweedie,- St. Albans. Mrs Horace G. Miller, formerly of Wellington, who returned recently from three months' visit to the United States, will make her home in Christchurch, where Mr Miller has been appointed managing-director of the Firestone Company in New Zealand. While in the United States Mrs Miller visited a world-famous ranch in Nebraska, where all the animals and buildings are white. Special albino horses are bred on the ranch of 3000 acres, and all other livestock, including the cows, are white. Between 25 to 30 young people, mostly girls, could spend their holidays on the ranch, said Mrs Miller. Mrs Miller travelled from America with Mrs S. Broers, wife of the president of the Firestone International Company. Mr and Mrs Broers, whose home is in Akron. Ohio, will be visitors to Christchurch to-day. About £25 was raised for the Harmonic Society’s music fund at a “bring and buy” sale held m the Mayfair Lounge by the committee of the ladies’ auxiliary of the Harmonic Society. An entertaining musical programme for the visitors included songs by Mrs Grace Blair and Miss Pat. Cottee, and recitations and monologues by Mrs Nancy Harrison. Mrs W. E. Olds and Mrs Hall were the accompanists. The committee was assisted by members of the auxiliary, and Mrs Claude Davies (a vice-president) thanked the artists. Sixty members of the Canterbury Association of the Federation of University Woman were entertained last night at Helen Connon Hall by Miss Alice Candy. A film, “Neuro-psychi-atry,” was screened, and was followed by an informal social gathing. An entertaining address “Hitch-hik-ing from England to New Zealand,” was given by Mr J. H. Milner at a meeting of the Travel Club held yesterday in the D.I.C. When war broke out in 1939. Mr Milner, a New Zealander from Oamaru, was working at Bradford. He enlisted in the Argyle and Sutherland Highlanders, and after service in North Africa was taken prisoner at Crete. When he was released. and returned to Scotland, he found that, as he had enlisted in Britain he would not be repatriated to New Zealand, and yesterday he gave an enlightening description of his efforts to reach the Dominion, which he eventually did—by warship, aeroplanes. and an aircraft-carrier. Before the address, songs were sung by Mrs Anthony Anderson, for whom Mrs J. H. Cocks clayed the accompaniments. Specially invited guests included Mrs Milner. Lady O’Leary (Wellington). Miss Meldrum (Oamaru). Mrs G. W. Wilson (Levin), and Mrs Peter Graham (Waiho, South Westland). Mr F. W. Hobbs presided, and Mrs Gladstone Ward and Mrs John Stewart were hostesses. The five members of the Musica Viva Society who left Christchurch yerterday for Wellington were entertained at an informal supper party at the Radiant Theatre on Wednesday evening by the women's social committee of the Civic Music Council. Mr A. M. Hollander (for the council) expressed | appreciation of. the pleasure which members of the sorietv had given to the citizens of Christchurch, and wished them continued success on their tour. Earlier in the week the visitors had been taken for a scenic drive by members of the Travel Club and entertained at tea in the Botanic Gardens. Miss Marion Williamson, who has been assistant to the secretary (Mr J. Roberts) of Ihe Canterbury Clothing Trades Workers’ Union for nearly seven years, and is shortly to be married. was presented with a log box by the staffs in the Trades Hall yesterday. The presentation was made by Mr Roberts, as president of the Trades Council and North Canterbury Labour Representation Committee. Miss Doreen Evans, who has been employed in the clothing industry, has been appointed to sbcceed Miss Williamson. Suggestions about the collection and preparation of flowers for the floral carpet which will be a feature of the floral festival to be held b” the Christchurch Free Kindergarten Association next month were given by Mrs A. Colvin (Wellington) to members of the floral carpet committee at a meeting held at the home of Mrs A. K. Hadfield (president of the association) on Wednesday. Mrs Colvin had arrived from Wellington that morning to give a demonstration on the making of the carpet. Members of the commitfee were introduced to Mrs Colvin and to the I executive by the convener. Mrs A. E. Hough. The pattern, which was designed by Mrs Colvin, was spread on the lawn, and a corner was filled with flowers to show the method to be used in the making of the carpet. Afternoon tea was served by members of the executive.
