“A GESTURE OF INDIGNATION”
LIVERPOOL STATE MINERS STRIKE FOR ONE DAY From Our Own Reporter GREYMOUTH, October 28. Work Stopped at the Liverpool State mine at Rewanui to-day, as a gesture of indignation by members of the union against the numerous remands applied lor by the police and granted in the manslaughter charge against a Liverpool mine worker, Mr G. E. English (president of the Runanga State Miners’ Union) told a reporter of “The Press” to-day. He added that there had been about eight remands, and the accused and his wife were suffering mental anxiety as a result. Mr English shid that some time ago he had written to the Minister of Justice (Mr H. G. R. Mason) protesting against the continual remands applied for by the police, but his appeal had received nothing more than a stereotyped reply. No work was done on backshift at the mine to-day, but work will resume to-morrow.
