MR TRUMAN ON U.S. DEFENCES

“SLIGHT EASING OF WORLD TENSION”

AIR FORCE CALLS FOR re-eNlistments

WASHINGTON, October 17. President Truman announced to-day that next year’s defence budget would be about 14,400.000,000 dollars, 2,000,000,000 dollars higher than for the current year.

The President said he believed there had been a slight easing of the world tension. As an example, he cited the United Nations meeting in Paris, saying that it gave him some confidence when the nations of the world, including Russia, were willing to talk over their problems. The United States Air Force to-day issued an urgent appeal for the immediate re-enlistment of 10,000 of its former pilots, navigators, and mechanics to serve in England in Superfortresses and in the Berlin air lift operations.

The men are promised the rank with which they left the service and a 20 per cent, pay bonus for overseas service.

The Air Force explained that the reenlistments would replace men who had completed their foreign tours of duty and those whose enlistments were expiring.
