ALLEGED ASSAULTS AT AUCKLAND

TWO MEN ARRESTED

(P.A.) AUCKLAND. Sept. 26. Assaults were made on two members of the police force in Auckland during the week-end.

When Senior-Sergeant J. T. McGrath, of Otahuhu police station, accosted a man in the Great South road at Otahuhu at 9.15 p.m. on Saturday, he was allegedly assaulted, and in the ensuing, tussle received a fractured nose and a bruised jaw. He immediately arrested the man, who will appear in the Otahuhu Police Court to-morrow.

Senior-Sergeant McGrath was treated at the casualty department of the Middlemore Hospital. The second assault occurred late on Saturday night. Constable J. T. Smart, from the Newton station, who was in plain clothes, is said to have intervened to break up a fight between a Maori and an Islander in Karangahape road. The constable grappled with the Islander and explained that he was a constable in plain* clothes. He was then allegedly assaulted by the Islander, but held his man until two other constables came to his assistance and helped with the arrest.
