ELECTRICITY FROM ATOMIC PLANT
Pile To Be Linked With Generators * CONSTRUCTION IN UNITED STATES (N.Z. I®rcss Association—Copyright)
(Rec. 11.45 p.m.) NEW YORK, September 24. The United States Atomic Energy Commission announced to-day that the construction of the first atomic power plant in history would begin at Schenectady soon. It would generate power from nuclear fission on an experimental basis, but would not produce it commercially.
The plant, which would not bs finished before the summer of 1950, was expected to pave the way for the design of reactors (atomic furnaces) to produce power economically in the future. If a secret process succeeds, the plant will utilise the heat in a uranium pile to drive generators producing electricity, and will turn out as by-pro-ducts even more fissionable material than it consumes in fuel.
The commission said that another reactor, using a different process for producing power, was being designed for installation in future in the Argonne National Laboratory, Chicago.
