MIGRATION OFFER BY AUSTRALIA
“UNLIMITED NUMBER OF REFUGEES”
LONDON, September 21. “The Australian Government surprised and heartened the International Refugee Organisation with an offer to take an unlimited number of Europe’s 800,000 refugees,’’ says the Geneva correspondent of the Associated Press. “Brigadier F. G. Galleghan. head of the Australian military mission in Germany and chief Australian delegate to the general council of the 1.R.0.. read a message from Australia, saying that Australia wanted, and could provide first-class resettlement opportunities for an unlimited number of displaced persons of the type which had already arrived, as well as their dependants. “The director-general of the 1.R.0. (Mr William Tuck) called upon the United States. Britain, and other countries to make more shipping available for refugees.
“The council decided to approach all governments of goodwill to discuss the maximum share of refugees they were prepared to admit.”
