WEDNESDAY (Before Mr F. F. Reid. S.M.) THEFT OF SACKS James Louis O’Connell (Mr D. J. Hewitt), aged 41, pleaded guilty when charged with stealing sacks valued at £2O, the property of Frederick Warren Walter, 100 sacks valued at £l4 3s 4d, the property. of James Alphonsus Callaghan, and 24 sacks valued at £1 16s, the property of John Raymond McGinn. Senior-Sergeant J. J. Kearns said accused had made a practice of visiting places at Marshland and stealing sacks, which he sold to business firms. On the first two charges, accused was sentenced to six weeks’ imprisonment and to onp month’s imprisonment with hard labour on the third charge, the sentences to be concurrent. IMPRISONMENT FOR THEFT John Stirling, aged 26, pleaded guilty to a charge of stealing a purse and contents of a total value of £5 3s 3d. the property of Norma Violet Blyth. Detective-Sergeant A. A. Herron said Stirling, a tram conductor, was a passenger on a tram and had picked up a purse which a woman had dropped in the tram. He had admitted to the police that he had picked up the purse and had spent some of the money. The Magistrate said as accused nad been an employee of the Christchurch Tramway Board for 16 months, he should have known that hiS first duty was to hand the purse to the conductor in charge of the tram. Stirling was sentenced to 21 days’ imprisonment with hard labour. BREACHES OF BUILDING REGULATIONS G. H. Brown was fined £5 for erecting a building at Rangiora without a permit. WORK DONE WITHOUT NOTICE Daniel James Doyle was fined £5 and ordered to pay solicitor’s fee, £2 2s, for installing a sink-waste without first giving notice to the engineer of the Christchurch Drainage Board PLUMBING WORK WITHOUT LICENCE Paul Robert Maling was fined £2 and ordered to pay solicitor’s fee, £2 2s, for doing plumbing work when not the'holder of a plumber’s licence.
