FAT FOR BRITAIN
ROTARY CLUB’S SCHEME
Details of the Christchurch Rotary Club’s plans for collecting fat for Britain were given by Mr w. G. Fernie, a member of the club, to a meeting yesterday of the provincial executive of the North Canterbury district of Federated Farmers. Nothing was more acceptable in any household in Britain than fat, Mr Fernie said. When he was there a year ago, the ration of cooking fat was an ounce and a half a person each week. Every farmer in Canterbury would receive a circular dealing with the appeal, Mr Fernie said. Farmers who were willing to give fat would have two-gallon or four-gallon containers left at their gates. The containers would be collected from the gates when they were filled. The fat would be taken direct to a depot and shipped to the Ministry of Food in England. for distribution to hospitals, orphanages And old people’s homes. JThe fat would be in addition to the ordinary rations. “I believe that farmers have a grudge about a previous scheme,” Mr Fernie said. “They were paid a negligible sum and the Government sold the fat at a profit. Under the new scheme no one will make a penny profit.”
