BURSARIES FOR UNIVERSITY
FURTHER EXTENSIONS ADVOCATED STUDENTS’ ASSOCIATION CONFERENCE A proposal for 1000 bursaries covering students.’ fees, book allowances, and living expenses was approved in principle by the New Zealand University Students’ Association meeting in Christchurch. It was suggested that £ll7 a year should be allowed for students living at home and £156 for those boarding. The scheme, modelled on one operating in Australia, was proposed by the New Zealand Student Labour Federation. It was suggested that awards should be made to deserving students (who might otherwise be prevented from attending University) on accrediting or University entrance examination results. the University Senate or Director of Education to be the controlling authority. A term of four years, with provision for an extension in special cases, is envisaged. The Students’ Association appointed a sub-committee to draft proposals for submission to the Government. It was submitted that this plan could be developed from the rehabilitation bursaries granted to former servicemen. The association will ask the University Senate to resume the special examinations in March and concession passes for former servicemen students. New Zealand will collaborate with Australia on the formation of a Pacific university students’ bureau. Messrs K. O’Brien (Wellington) and R. J. Tizard (Auckland) were appointed delegates to the next conference of the National Union of Australian University Students. An Australian universities’ debating team will visit New Zealand early in 1949. About 150 Australian students will visit New Zealand during the summer vacation under a holicray employment scheme. The New Zealand association will assist in the entertainment of the visitors. The next conference of the association will be held from April 23 to 25. So far few applications have been received for the students’ congress to be held at Curious Cove, near -Picton. early next year. The association urged all members to support this experiment. Conditions governing the award of University blues will be reviewed by a special committee. The association considered that the present system of awards to all representatives of the University, irrespective of attainment, was unsatisfactory. Recommendations to reduce the expenses of the annual winter tournament were adopted.
