CHARTER ON WOMEN’S RIGHTS

(feec. 7 p.m.) GENEVA, August 20. The United Nations Economic and Social Council adopted the first three items of a seven-point charter on women’s rights, proclaiming the equality of men and women in all spheres of economic, cultural, social, and political life. Resolutions still before the Council demand for women equal rights to payment for work with men. _ The Soviet delegate told the Council that the reason for Russia’s frequent refusals to let Russian women who had married foreigners leave Russia was that “foreign Powers sometimes employ such women as spies. Foreigners send their nationals into Russia and recruit agents, especially from our women.”

Japanese War Criminals Hanged.— Ten Japanese war criminals were hanged to-day at the Sugaro prison. All were convicted of being responsible for, or having contributed to, the murder of Allied war prisoners.— Tokyo. August 21.
