ALLEGED GIFTS TO POLICE

N.Z. ALLIANCE ASKS FOR PUBLIC INQUIRY (P.A.) WELLINGTON. August 5. During the discussion of a resolution calling for a public inquiry into matters raised in proceedings in the Magistrate’s Court at Napier when the supply of liquor to jnembers of the Police Force was alleged, the annual meeting of the New Zealand Alliance was informed to-day that action was likely which would “reveal the facts of that’case in quite a different light.” The following resolution was adopted: “While recognising and paying tri-, bute to the general high standard of integrity of all ranks in the Police Department, this meeting Views with concern recent published statements alleging relationships between certain members of the force and publicans which are inimicable to enforcing the licensing laws. As the incidents published tend to shake the confidence of the public in the integrity of the whole force we urge that searching inquiries be made into all such statements. Should evidence be forthcoming to substantiate the charges, the charges should be heard and determined publicly. In our opinion a public inquiry should be held concerning the matters raised in recent proceedings in the Napier Magistrate’s Court."
