Sir David Smith, Chancellor of tht University of New Zealand, receiver. the honorary degree of Doctor ofCommon Law at Oxford from Mr A. N. Bryan-Brown, of Worcester College. He was the first of several leading members of the Congress of Universities of the Commonwealth to have a degree conferred on him. Mr BryanBrown referred to Sir David Smith’s distinguished contributions to university administration, both in writing and in practice.—London, July 22.

“Bill Spencer is probably the most popular man we have ever had on this board,” said Mr C. S. Thompson, chairman of the Canterbury Education Board, paying tribute yesterday morning to Mr W. P. Spencer who is retiring after 30 years’ service on the board. He had given wonderful service over a very long period. Mr W. T. Langley said Mr Spencer had a remarkable talent for fostering happy relations among the board, its officers, and staff. A resolution recording appreciation of Mr Spencer’s work and regret that his health did not permit him to seek re-election was carried. The -Canterbury Education Board yesterday appointed the following representatives on post-primary sclwol boards:—Ashburton Technical llign School. Mr A. Brown; Christchutch Technical College. Mr A. Greenweed; Rangiora High. School. Mr V. 'J. Corbett; Greymouth Technical IMsh School. Mr S. McClymont. A resolution was carried thanking Mr F. L Turley for’ three years’ service on the Greymouth board. The chairman (Mr R. S. Goodman), the secretary (Mr F. Metson) and a member of the board 'Mr W. H. Hall), were yesterday appointed to represeif the Timaru Harbour Board at the Harbour Bdards’ conference to be held, at Dunedin from October 13 to 15. Mr S. A. Le Roche, chief agricultural instructor, will represent the Canterbury Education Board on the Summit Road Scenic Society. Mr J. Lenihan. former headmaster of the Woolston School, who recently retired on superannuation, was the guest of the Canterbury Education Board at morning tea yesterday. Tributes were paid to his long service.
