AERONAUTICAL RESEARCH
SCHOLARSHIP FOR MR W. G. RAINBIRD
(P.A.) WELLINGTON, July 22. The aeronautical research committee set up by the Department of Scientific and Industrial Research has selected Mr W. G. Rainbird, 8.E., now doing post-graduate research at Auckland University College, to go to England as the second annual holder of a two-year research scholarship at the United Kingdom College of Aeronautics. An officer of the department said these scholarship holders worked on generous terms and were required to return to New Zealand employment for one year after finishing their course. New Zealand was thus assured of a continual flow of the latest information in this branch of science.
The precise lines to be followed- by research in New Zealand would depend on the final decision of the Commonwealth Advisory Aeronautical Research Council, which met in Australia earlier in the year and to which a New Zealand delegation took proposals for research in this country. These proposals w«:e influenced by the knowledge furnished by Sir Ben Lockspeiser, who also attended the conference. New Zealand possessed a number of advantages for aeronautical research, including isolation, climate, terrain, and airfields. It was probable that in the next year or two the Department of Scientific and Industrial Research, in conjunction with the university colleges, would undertake a fundamental aeronautical research programme.
