INCREASE IN AUCKLAND DIOCESE

(P.A.) AUCKLAND, July 22. A move to increase vicars’ stipends, and to provide the same payments for those in the city and the country, was supported by the Synod of the Diocese of Aucklad last evening. The synod passed a resolution that its standing committee be directed to prepare amendments to appropriate statutes to provide a minimum stipend of £450 for all vicars. An increase of £25 a year in salaries, from April 1, 1948, approved on the first day of the synod, brought the minimum rate for parishes to £445. and for parochial districts to £385. The synod also adopted a motion that ways and means of increasing the stipends of Maori clergy should be considered.
