COMPETITION FOR BACONERS

BIG INCREASE IN ENTRIES Entries for the Canterbury District Pig Council’s ninth annual baconer competition total nearly 220, representing an increase of nearly 30 per cent, compared with last season. Entries come from all parts of Canterbury, Nelson, Marlborough, and the West Coast. The objects of the competition, which will be judged on August 3, are to find strains of good breeding qualities which can only be found by measuring on hooks and to show farmers the type of animal required for local and overseas markets. The competition will be judged on New Zealand standards, which are based on recommehdations from the Smithfield market, England. Judges will be Messrs P. G. Stevens (instructor in animal husbandry at Canterbury Agricultural College, Lincoln) and H. W. Mclntosh (supervisor of the Canterbury Council).
