36 AWARDS TO SOUTH/ ISLAND CADETS The names of medal winners in the 1947 Empire Schools’ Rifle Shooting Match for the King George V Trophy and the five challenge trophies, the Senior Imperial Shield, the Junior Imperial Shield, the Earl Jellicoe Sword, the Earl Haig’ Sword, and the Lord Milner Trophy, were announced yesterday by Southern Military District headquarters. New Zealand was second to South Africa in the match for the King George V Trophy, awarded to the country returning the best 3000 cards, but won four of the five other tropnies and more silver and bronze medals than any other country. These awards were: 30 silver medals, awarded to cadets scoring 100 points, or 97 and upwards if the .22 S.M.L.E. rifle were used; 26 bronze medals for cadets scoring 99 points, or 96 if the .22 rifle were used; and three silver and three bronze instructors’ medals. Of this number, cadets in the Southern Military District won 36 medals—--16 silver and 20 bronze—and instructors four —one silver and three bronze. Silver medals were won by D. R. Far rant (Christ’s College), L. Champion (Westport Technical High School), J. Patterson. E. J. Bush, and R. I. Hubbard (Marlborough College), nine cadets from the Southland Boys’ High School, one, from the South Otago High School, and one from the Roxburgh High School. Bronze medals were won by R. J. McKergow, R. T. Brabner, J. B. R. Loughnan, and G. L. Richards (Christ's College), H. O. Duckworth (St. Bede's College), A. L. Joyce (Christchurch Boys’ High School), G. Bird (West?ort Technical High School), P. R. omlihson (Nelson College), J. G. Williams, R. Robb. I. Hyslop, and R. Wackrow (Marlborough College), and by six cadets from the Southland Boys’ High School, one from the Southland Technical College, and one from the Roxburgh High School. An instructor’s bronze medal was won by Warrant Officer I. P. V. Berry, chief instructor to the Christ’s College cadets, who were second in the Senior Imperial Shield Competition, and third in the Imperial Junior Shield Competition. The other instructors’ medals were won by instructors at the Southland Boys’ High School (silver medal), and at the Marist Brothers’ High School, Invercargill, and the Roxburgh High School (silver medals). All the medals except the instructors’ bronze medals, which will be sent out later, are now on their way to New Zealand.
