MR BEVAN’S REMARK ON TORIES
LORD RAGLAN REFUSES TO ATTEND DINNER (Special Correspondent N.Z.P.A.) LONDON, July 19. Mr Aneurin Bevan’s speech in which he said that Tories were “lower than vermin” continues to have repercussions. The latest is the refusal of. iLord Raglan, Lord Lieutenant of Monmouthshire. to attend a dinner in honour of Mr Bevan given by the local council, of which he is a forjner mem“I thought it over and did not rush my decision,” said Lord Ragjan. ‘‘l have always been prepared to take a good deal from Mr Bevan, for I have considerable admiration for him. But one must draw the limit. His speech surprised me. I thought he had gone too far, though in the 20 years I haVe khown him one always expected extremes. After it I decided that no self-respecting Tory could associate with Mr Bevan 4 and I shall not do so unless he qualifies his remarks. “I wrote to Mr Bevan telling him I would not be at the dinner and giving my reasons. I have had no reply. I hardly expect one.”
