MIDDLESEX OUT FOK 203

GOOD BOWLING BY AUSTRALIANS MATCH INTERRUPTED BY RAIN (Bee. 10 p.m.) LONDON. July 17. D. C. S. Compton and Edrich were the only Middlesex batsmen who were able to deal adequately with a vigorous Australian attack in the cricket match at Lord’s to-day. Johnston began the rout when he dismissed the opener, Robertson, in his third over with the total at 13. Chosen by “Wisden’s” as one of England’s five cricketers of the year in 1947, Robertson has failed dismally in each of his appearances against Australia, although he has scored pro? lifically in county matches. Johnston removed Edrich to make Middlesex two for 78. He had the young Cambridge left-hander. Dewes, caught by Tallon, and his three wickets had then cost 20 runs. He finished the day with three for 43. Loxton bowled accurately and courageously. He dismissed D. C. S. Compton with a beautiful ball. He de-

served his figures of three for 33. Rain took the edge off the Australians’ satisfaction over their fine bowling feats. With 85 minutes left for play when Middlesex was dismissed, it seemed probable that Australia would be well on its way towards a victory at stumps, but a persistent drizzle began when Morris and Brown had made six in 10 minutes, and stopped play for the rest of the day.
