BRITISH COAL BOARD
“MONEY SPENT WAS WORTH WHILE” MR SHIN WELL DEFENDS OPERATIONS (Rec. 9 p.m.) LONDON, July 17. The money spent by the National Coal Board’ had been worth while, said the Secretary of State for War (Mr E. Shinwell) in a speech at Easington. It was unavoidable expendi-
ture. because of the general conditions in the mining industry when the board took over. It would have been easy to avoid a deficit by refusing to grant a fivedav week and other reforms. The Conservatives forgot that the Baldwin Government had subsidised the mining industry by £25.000.000, and overlooked the fact that in many coal districts. particularly in Wales ana Durham, no profits had been made for many years. Without this "vast, necessary experiment” both the industry and the country would have been in a still more precarious plight, Mr Shinwell added.
