BODY OF MOUSE IN BREAD
ALLEGATIONS AGAINST AUCKLAND BAKERS “The Press” Special Service . AUCKLAND. July 17. Two charges of selling bread which was unfit for human consumption were preferred against Mathieson Parkes, Ltd., bakers. Mount Eden (Mr Moody), before Mr F. H. Levien, S.M., yesterday. It was also alleged that bread made by the firm was liable to pollution by its default. All three charges were denied. Mr Rosen, for the Health Department, said a Mount Albert housewife found part of a mouse’s body in a loaf purchased from the firm. About 11 days later matter which was found to be a piece of rodent’s skin was found in another loaf. Officers of the department inspected the bakery and found evidence of mice in the flour loft, where the flour was sifted. Mr Moody said his clients could not understand how the mice got into the bread. All care was taken. Trouble had been experienced with the sieve, which had often become clogged. Mr Levien said he would inspect the bakehouse before giving judgment. Decision was reserved.
