AVONDALE CLUB’S MEETING

GOLDEN REIGN WINS STEEPLES

(P.A.) AUCKLAND, July 18. The Avondale Jockey Club’s Winter meeting was opened yesterday in fine weather. The going was heavy. The totalisator handled £142,473, a record for Avondale, and an increase of £31,815 10s on the corresponding day last year. Following the Mount Albert Steeplechase, the judicial committee inquired into the running of the favourite, Duncan. The committee expressed its dissatisfaction with the handling of the horse in the early stages of the race by the rider, W. A Sinton, but the evidence however did not justify a conclusion that the rider's failure to take a more prominent position in the early stages of the race was other than an error of judgment. The owner and trainer’was completely exonerated.. A protest by A. McGregor, trainer of Broiefort Prince, who finished second in the Kia Ora Handicap against the first horse. General March, on the grounds of interference in the straight, was upheld and the placings were reversed. The payment of the win dividend only was held up during the hearing of the protest. An inquiry was also opened into alleged interference by the winner. Ostentatious, in the final stages of the Windsor Hurdles. It was adjourned until next Saturday. F. Hain, rider of Hunting Mac in the Grey Lynn Hurdles, was fined £2 for having faulty gear. Hunting Mac lost his saddle and rider when running fourth about a furlong from the finish. Results; —
