FINAL DAY AT TRENTHAM

RACING

WINTER HURDLES TO CORINEUS

HOWE’S GREAT EFFORT IN WINTER OATS

From Our Own Reporter WELLINGTON, July 18. A decisive win by Corineus in the Winter Hurdles, a mightly performance by Howe in the Winter Oats, and N. B. Holland's feat in riding three winners were the features of the final day of the Wellington Racing Club’s winter meeting at Trentham on Saturday. On a track that was very heavy and cutting out badly, and - provided atrocious going—almost as bad as it has ever been at Trentham—there was some splendid racing, though conditions were trying for both horses and riders. A very bad patch of going at the turn into the straight was marked off for some distance by bamboo poles which kept the horses about 12 feet out from the rails. ,

The meeting was held in fine weather and there was a large attendance. The totalisator handled £221,516, compared with £202,387 10s on the corresponding day last year. The total for the meeting was £588,068 10s, compared with £599.091 10s last year, a decrease of £11,023.

Corineus proved himself a grand stayer when he wore down Foxchase over the last furlong to win the Winter Hurdles decisively. Corineus was always handily placed in the running and covered no more ground than necessary. Just after clearing the last fence, it looked as if Foxchase, which was making his run further out in the middle of the track, had the measure of Corineus, but under a hard ride Corineus finished resolutely and forged ahead to win by a length. Foxchase ran a splendid race after losing several lengths at the start, but found his weight just too much for him. Skywriter battled on gamely into third place after having a life at the hurdle in front of the stands, when he got in too close and almost dislodged his rider, R. Hawes, who made an excellent recovery. Matapan was the first to show out from Corineus. Incident, Skywriter, and Moutoa Lord. The latter soon joined Matapan and at the end of four furlongs had worked clear of him, with a further gap of six lengths to Skywriter and Vassilikos, which were just ahead of Corineus. Round to the straight the first time, Corineus made up ground on the inside and with a round to go, Moutoa Lord was still clear of Matapan with Corineus next, followed by Skywriter and Vassilikos, with Boolamskee and Town Survey heading the others. At the mile Moutoa Lord's lead had been reduced to a length by Matapan and Vassilikos, which were ’followed by Skywriter and Corineus. the rest being headed by Boolamskee, Nanook, and Foxchase. Nearing the five furlongs Boolamskee fell and at the half mile Corineus and Skywriter were only a length behind Moutoa Lord, with a gap to Vassilikos, Foxchase, Desert Trek, and Town Survey. Round the home turn Foxchase improved his position to join Corineus and the pair followed Moutoa Lord into the straight, with little change among the remainder. In the run home Foxchase and Corineus soon drew clear and Corineus proved t6o solid over the last furlong and won by a length. Skywriter was eight lengths back in third place, with a neck to Town Survey, which came home well, and another length to Desert Trek. There was a gap to Vassilikos and then followed Moutoa Lord, Nanook, Incident, Matapan, Peter Brierly and Pimlico

Howe’s Great Performance Howe registered one of the best performances of his career when, in a punishing finish with Earldale, he mastered 9-12 and won by a neck. In all his previous successes on Howe. W. J. Broughton has never resorted to the whip with the vigour he did on Saturday, and it. is sufficient to say that no -horse could have finished more courageously. Under the conditions it was a performance of exceptional merit. Ruling Master, Desert Girl, and Mercian Lad were slow away. Wild Note began brilliantly and got away two lengths clear of Citation, Howe, and Tiger Tan, with High Order, Special Flight, Second Seal, and Earldale at the head of the others. At the end of two furlongs Citation headed off Wild Note, and at the half mile had been joined by High Order, the pair being followed by Special Flight, Earldale, Tiger Tan, Mercian Lad, and Howe, which had drifted a few places along the back. Round the home turn Earldale moved up to join Citation and Howe also improved his position, with Ruling Master, Prince Coronach, and Merry Robin making runs from further back. High Order having dropped out. Citation and Earldale were followed into the straight by Howe, Ruling Master, Special Flight, and Merry Robin. In the run home Citation was soon headed by Earldale, which was being challenged by Howe at the furlong,’ with Special Flight making a run on the inner. Momentarily Earldale looked like winning, but Howe‘s determined effort under a vigorous ride carried the day and he won going away by a neck. Special Flight was a length and a half away m third place, with half a length to Merry Robin. Ruling Master and Tiger Tan followed at length intervals, with a gap to Dark Arrow. Then came Banshee, Hormuz, Desert Girl, Royal Victor,, and Second Seal.

Ratal’s Win in Steeplechase In the Matai Steeplechase Ballinabuoy made a good effort to lead all the way, but he was outstayed by Batal, which headed him with two furlongs to run and came away for an easy win. It was Batal’s second start in a steeplechase, and his display augurs well for his future. Grand Central came home well to get third place and might have finished closer had he not dipped badly on landing at the third last fence, the brush at the five furlongs, after standing off too far. His rider, H. Lynch, was lucky to get Grand Central on his feet again. From the start Ballinabuoy soon worked to the front and led from Grand Forest, Tenorman, Batal, and Lunaria. At the first fence Master Play dipped after landing and lost his rider, and Tatara Lad ran off at the sod wall at the seven furlongs. The casualties continued when Whiphand refund at the’ post and rails at the six furlongs and Find out was run off at the three furlongs. Grand Forest fell at the first of the stand double where, with a round covered, Ballinabuoy led Batal and High Morale, with Lunaria and Tenorman next and Grand Central at the head of the others. Lunaria then fell on the flat 40 yards past the stand double. Round to the back straight Grand Central ran up into second place. At th? seven furlongs Tenorman gave grouna when he hit the sod wall and Ballinabuoy continued in the lead along the back from Grand Central. Batal, Hunting Dink, and Indian Sign. When Grand Central had a life at the five furlongs, Batal took second place and closed on Ballinabuoy round the home turn, the pair being six lengths clear of Grand Central entering the straight, with a further eight lengths to Hunting Dink. Batal was first over the last fence and went on to win easily by six lengths. Grand Central finished on again to get within half a length of the tiring Ballinabuoy. The fourth horse, Hunting Dink, was 12 lengths back, with a bigger gap to Indian Sign. Then came High Morale, Spiro, and Ring Scarf. Tenorman and Aga Kay were pulled up. Details
