THE TABERNACLE DISPUTE
CHURCH APPROVES NEW DEED “The Press” Special Service AUCKLAND. July 16. The Auckland Baptist Tabernacle Bill, which makes provision for the readmission of former members of the church, and which is acceptable to former members, the trustees and present members, was unanimously approved at a meeting of members of the Tabernacle last evening. The purpose of the bill is to replace the old trust deed with a covenant safeguarding the trust properties and church buildings. The meeting was presided over by the Rev. Dr. James McGinlay, the Scottish-American evangelist who has been occupying the Tabernacle pulpit in the absence in England of Dr. Alexander Hodge. The bill will thus provide a settlement of a dispute which first began in 1941, when a resolution at a private meeting of members that the minister, Dr. Hodge, should be asked to resign, was defeated by a margin of more than 100 votes. In 1944 the Church seceded from the Baptist Union and Dr. Hodge resigned from the ministerial ranks of the union. In the same year the Baptist Assembly suspended Dr. Hodge.
