FINAL DAY AT TRENTHAM

RACING

CORINEUS APPEALS IN HURDLES LYN VAALS FAVOURED . IN WINTER OATS Although track conditions will be simi- ; lar to last Saturday, strong fields will still parade for the concluding day of the Wellington Racing Club’s winter meeting at Trentham to-day. The feature race on ! the programme will be the Winter Hurdles, which has attracted one of the best fields of hurdlers in any event this winter. The ability of Corineus, Boolamskee, Desert Trek, and Foxchase in bad ground is well known and, along with the young and improving Skywriter, the finish of the Winter Hurdles looks like being fought out by these five horses. All are solid stayers, but under the conditions likely to prevail the choice may be for Corineus. Boolamskee, and Desert Trek. This year Corineus has made good progress as a hurdler, and he was unlucky to be beaten in the Great Northern Hurdles. He has been racing solidly on the flat, and no runner will parade in more solid order. Boolamskee failed at the Great Northern meeting, but showed a return to form in the Trentham Hurdles and has had time to improve further Desert Trek ■will be improved by his race in. the Lambton Hurdles last Saturday, and the longer journey will be in his favour. He takes a long time to work up his pace, but he is always doing his best work at the right end of the race. Skywriter is attempting a task that few four-year-olds have been successful in doing. However, he has demonstrated that he is something above the average by winning his last three races. He is a fit horse, but it remains a question whether he is tough enough for such a trying race in his first sqason. Foxchase is also a first-season hurdler, but he is a hardy old gelding that has been a very successful performer in the mud on the fiat. However, he is not a big horse and it is a question whether he will prove capable of mastering 10-13. Pimlico, which will be bracketed with Skywriter, appeals most of the remainder. The Winter Oats The Winter Oats is no less open than the principal flat races on the earlier days. Lynn Vaals and Ruling Master both recorded attractive winning performances last Saturday, and will be well supported. Dark Arrow, Citation, Tiger Tan, Mercian Lad, and Earldale all handle bad ground well and will also carry a good measure of support. If Lyn Vaals is started for this race she must have strong prospects of winning again, as there was a good deal c-f merit in her performance last Saturday. Ruling Master has been slow early in both his races at Trentham, and in this field cannot afford to give away too much ground. No line on Citation’s prospects was gained last Saturday, but she won at Hastings recently and galloped well on Thursday morning, so will have to be respected. She is a good mare on her day.

Dark Arrow had his chances ruined last Saturday, but with the benefit of the race 1 he is not likely to be far away at the finish to-day. He is a good beginner and i a grand weight-carrier. Mercian Lad ran 1 a good race in the Whyte Handicap and did not run last Saturday. He is a useS ful performer, always likely to surprise. Tigei Tsn is a solid performer that has been carrying big weights. He gained a slight relief in this race, and may come into the picture again. Earldale was going well when he fell last Saturday, and can be rated a likely improver. There is no outstanding performer in the Matai Steeplechase, but Hunting Dink, Batal, Find Out, and Ballinabuoy are improvers that should race prominently. Hunting Dink has had a fairly strenuous season, but he seems to be standing up to it well. Batal made a very encourag- ■ ing showing for his first appearance when he finished sixth in the Wellington Steeplechase, but he may need further experience. Find Out has won twice this season, and impressed when he was schooled at Trentham on Thursday. He has had enough racing to be well seasoned and may prove one of the hardest to beat. Ballinabuoy’s all-the-way win in the Mariri Hack Steeples on the first day i was a good effort, and he may come into I the picture again. Master Play and I Lunaiia finished fourth and fifth respec--1 tively in the July Steeples last Saturday. 1 Master Play ran possibly his best race j this season, but his jumping was still not j all- that it could be. Over the shorter ’ journey he may prove troublesome, j Lunaria gave the best display of his career. If the race did not take too much cut of him. he may be prominent again, i Whiphand is an experienced jumper, but I none too reliable, and the best prospect among the older jumpers in the field may’ be Tenorman, which has now had. sufficient racing to be ready to show a return to. form.
