SCHOOL OF ART SKETCH CLUB

EXHIBITION FOR 25TH ANNIVERSARY With its annual exhibition next week, the Sketch Club of the Canterbury University College School of Art will celebrate its twenty-fifth anniversary. Since 1923 it has been continuously active; but it had its beginnings as long ago as 1906 when a students’ guild of arts and crafts was formed. This was disbanded in 1910, revived in 1913, and disbanded again in 1916, chiefly because so many members were absent on war service. Monthly exhibition meetings are now held where work done “out of school” is hung and criticised by prominent artists. Holiday and week-end trips for painting and sketching are held regularly. In its early days, the club arranged the annual arts ball; but this responsibility has since passed to the social committee of the School of Art. In recent years members have been sending food parcels to former members now in England. Coming events include an exhibition on August 7, when Mr A. F. Nicoll will be the critic on set liferpainting and portrait subjects. Early in September, a trip will be made to Arthur’s Pass for field work. The Sketch Club’s exhibition, to be opened on Monday evening by Mr A. E. Flower, will be larger than usual, including the work of some former members.
