GRAIN AND PRODUCE MARKETS

(By Our Commercial Editor.) With no business passing in potatoes, the grain and produce markets in North Canterbury are abnormally quiet. Prices, however, remain very firm for all seeds, and no signs of weakness are detected. A few inquiries continue to be received from overseas, but buyers are working within very restricted price limits, which precludes the possibility of sales. From inquiries being made of merchants it would appear that, subject to favourable weather conditions in the spring, peas will again be a popular crop with many farmers. Prices offering for peas grown on contract have appreciated someQuotations are as under: — Wheat.—Tuscan varieties, 8s a bushel fob growers’ nearest port. DUNEDIN (P.A.) DUNEDIN, July 16. Because of the fine weather recently, farmers should be well ahead with their work and it is possible that spring sowings will bring the total area under cereal crops to more than was sown down in either of the last two years. The market for small seeds was quiet this week, but this is not unusual at this time of year. Values for white clover, cowgrass, and Montgomery red clover are unaltered. Cocksfoot, is still being inquired for, but very few lines are on offer. There is no alteration to record in the values of chewings fescue, crested dogstail, and browntop.
